A 17-year-old student from Dubai has made history by winning the UAE’s first-ever gold medal in swimming at the Asian Youth Games!
Hussein Shawky, who studies at GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, won the 50-meter butterfly race in Bahrain and even set a new event record.
Hussein is originally from Egypt and joined the GEMS Swimming Centre of Excellence in 2019. He has trained with Hamilton Aquatics since 2015 and became eligible to represent the UAE in 2024.
Before this big win, he already raced in international events for Egypt and competed for the UAE at the Arab Aquatics Championships in Morocco.
Hussein said he feels proud to win gold for the UAE and thanked his coaches, teachers, and everyone who believed in him. His school gave him special training and support so he could do well both in the pool and in the classroom.
