Foggy weather can be tricky for drivers, especially for parents on the road. When thick fog sets in, it reduces your ability to see other cars and judge distances, making safe driving extra important.
One important rule: Don’t use your hazard lights while you’re driving in fog—unless you’ve actually stopped. Using hazard lights while moving can confuse other drivers because they won’t know when you’re turning or slowing down. Experts in the UAE say this practice is dangerous during foggy conditions.
Here are some clear, practical tips for parents and adult drivers to stay safe when visibility is low:
- Use your low‑beam headlights and front & rear fog lights—not hazard lights. If the road signs or authorities instruct you, follow any reduced speed limits.
- Give yourself more space between your car and the one ahead. In fog you’ll need more distance to stop safely.
- Stay in your lane and avoid changing lanes unless absolutely necessary. Lane changes are riskier when you can’t see clearly.
- Drive more slowly than usual. In heavy fog you should be able to stop within the distance you can see ahead.
- If visibility becomes too low (you can’t see other vehicles or lane markings clearly), pull over to a safe place like a rest area or petrol station—and turn on your hazard lights only once you’re stopped.
If you’re driving children or other passengers, explain to them why you’re driving more slowly and being extra cautious. Showing calm and safe behaviour helps them understand and feel secure.
By following these tips when fog hits, you help protect yourself, your passengers and other road users. Drive safely!
